Why this arrangement works
Open rooms with one long usable wall
A sequence, rather than a triangle
The run moves from fridge to sink, then preparation counter and cooker. A straight kitchen cannot form a work triangle; the order of tasks matters here.
Preparation between sink and hob
A continuous 100 cm counter separates the sink and cooker. Drawers underneath keep preparation tools and waste storage near the work.
Appliances with landing space
The dishwasher is next to the sink on the fridge side. Separate 60 cm counters beside the fridge and cooker provide places to set things down.
A single-wall kitchen follows a working sequence rather than a triangle. In the preview, F is the fridge, S the sink and H the hob/oven. Gold marks preparation space.

Read the dimensions before copying the layout
The example room is 4.8 × 3.0 m (15 ft 9 in × 9 ft 10 in), with one 460 cm (15 ft 1 in) run along the window wall and 10 cm spare at each end.
In order: the fridge, a 60 cm landing counter, the dishwasher, the sink under the window, two 50 cm drawer units, the cooker and a final 60 cm landing counter.
There is 240 cm (94 in) of clear floor in front of the run (235 cm (93 in) at the fridge), and the door is in the opposite wall near the fridge end.
From the fridge to the cooker is about 3.4 m (11 ft 2 in), centre to centre: a straight run trades the short triangle for a walk along it.
These are the distances in this example, measured from the starter plan. Your room, units and appliances will differ, so measure them in your own plan.

Adaptation A: a 3.6 m wall
Take the fridge and its 60 cm landing off the run and the rest (dishwasher, sink, 100 cm preparation counter, cooker and 60 cm landing) is 3.4 m (11 ft 2 in) long, which fits a 3.6 m wall with 10 cm to spare at each end. Put the fridge on an adjoining wall or in a tall housing, with a landing space next to it.
Delete the fridge and its counter, slide the run along and shorten the wall.
Adaptation B: an island opposite the run
A 60 cm deep island needs the 1,067 mm work aisle in front of the run and a 914 mm walkway behind it: 60 + 107 + 60 + 91 = about 3.18 m (10 ft 5 in) from the run wall to the far wall. This 3.0 m room is too shallow for that, so an island here would only work if the far side is open to another room.
Add an island and measure the gap to the far wall before deciding.
Common mistakes with a single-wall kitchen
- Putting the hob at the end of the run against a wall, with no landing space on that side.
- Running out of preparation space between the sink and the hob: keep at least 90 cm there.
- Forgetting wall units and tall storage, because a single run has little base storage.

Questions about the single-wall kitchen
How long does a single-wall kitchen need to be?
This example uses a 460 cm run with the fridge on it. Without the fridge and its landing counter, the same sequence fits in 3.4 m (11 ft 2 in). Shorter walls usually mean a smaller sink, hob or preparation counter.
Does a single-wall kitchen have a work triangle?
No. The sink, hob and fridge are in a line, so plan the order instead: fridge, sink, preparation space, then hob, with landing space at each.
Can I add an island to a one-wall kitchen?
Only if the room is deep enough: about 3.18 m (10 ft 5 in) from the run wall to the far wall for a 60 cm island with a work aisle in front and a walkway behind. This 3.0 m deep example is too shallow.
What to check in your room
This example needs a 4.8 m wall. For a shorter run, remove or change cabinets individually and recheck working space; appliances should retain their real dimensions.
