Garages are more standardised than most rooms. A single-car garage is typically 12 × 20 feet, with a tight practical minimum of about 10 × 18. A two-car garage runs 20 × 20 feet, and a comfortable one is 24 × 24 — the extra room lets both car doors open and lets you walk between the vehicles. Sketch the shell at the standard size, drop your cars in, then plan the workbench and shelving around them.
The size that fits the car is not always the size that fits the life around it — plan for the doors, not just the bodywork.

A garage that fits the car on paper can still be a squeeze in person — the gaps around the vehicle decide whether it is pleasant to use.
Leave about 3 feet of clear space around a parked car so you can open the doors, load the boot and walk past without turning sideways. In a two-car garage, protect the strip down the middle above everything else.
A workbench about 24 inches deep gives you room to work without stealing a parking bay. Run it along the back wall, in front of the car’s nose, where the space is otherwise dead.
Storage shelving is typically 18 to 24 inches deep. Line it up the side walls and go tall — a garage’s best storage is vertical, above the height of a car door.
A garage is two rooms fighting for one floor: parking and everything else. Place the car first — the least flexible thing in the room — then fit storage and a workshop into the space it leaves. Try a few arrangements before you drill a single bracket.
Dedicate the back wall — the strip in front of the car’s nose — to a workbench about 24 inches deep, with a pegboard or tool wall above it. That band of floor is unreachable by the car anyway, so it costs you nothing in parking. Keep a clear standing zone of a couple of feet in front of the bench, and you have a proper workshop that folds away the moment the car pulls in.
The single biggest win in most garages is going vertical. Line the side walls with 18–24 inch shelving and wall cabinets, mounted above car-door height so nothing gets clipped when the doors swing open. Bikes, ladders and seasonal boxes come off the floor, the car fits again, and the whole space reads as bigger. Map the shelf depth to scale so it never bites into the walkway you need alongside the car.
The clearance that catches people out is not the car’s length — it is the door swing. Open car doors need room on both sides, so keep roughly 3 feet clear alongside each vehicle and protect the centre aisle in a two-car garage. Check the up-and-over or roller door’s travel too, and make sure the internal side door into the house has space to open without hitting a shelf.
If you only park one car but the garage is built for two, split it deliberately: one bay for the vehicle, the other for a gym, workshop or storage run. Mark the parking bay at ~6 × 15 feet so the working half never creeps into it, and everything on the free side stays sized to move aside when the second car comes in.
