Getting started

Do I need an account to start planning?

You can open the planner and start drawing immediately. If an account or particular access level is needed for an optional export or service, the planner explains that before you use it.

Does Free Room Planner work on mobile?

Yes. You can draw and edit using touch controls. A desktop or tablet gives you more canvas space for a detailed plan, but the main planning controls are available on mobile.

Drawing and measurements

How do I enter exact room dimensions?

Select a wall and enter its exact length and thickness. For a rectangle, Quick Room lets you enter the room width and depth before it draws the walls.

Read Draw and measure a room
What is the difference between inside and full-wall measurements?

Inside measurements describe the usable space between the inner wall faces. Full-wall measurements include wall thickness. Choose the option that matches how you measured the real room.

Read Draw and measure a room
How do I add a door or window?

Find the item under Structure or search for it, place it against the correct wall, then set its width and direction. Quick Room can also add openings while creating a rectangular room.

Read Draw and measure a room
Why do other walls move when I move one wall?

Connected corners stay joined so the room does not accidentally break apart. Detach the wall first when you need to move it independently.

Read Draw and measure a room
How do I stop walls or furniture snapping?

Turn Snap off from the toolbar, or hold Alt while dragging to override it for one move. With Snap off, walls, room corners and items go exactly where you let go and the corner readout shows the true angle. Turn it back on for clean wall joins, true 90° corners and tidy alignment.

Read Position items precisely
What does Snap do, and why do room corners only lock at 90°?

Snap has several jobs: it settles wall ends and items on the grid, pulls wall ends onto nearby walls and guides, aligns items with walls and neighbours, and lands a dragged room corner on the one point where both walls run straight. That point is the only true 90°, so the corner locks there and nowhere else; dashed guides and a target show it while you drag, and the readout turns green and says 90° when you reach it. With Snap off, corners move freely and the readout shows the exact angle.

Read Draw and measure a room
Can I draw an L-shaped or irregular room?

Yes. Use the Wall tool instead of Quick Room and place each corner manually. Join the final wall to the first so the planner detects the enclosed area.

Read Draw and measure a room
How do I find a furniture item?

Browse the room categories or type the item name in library search. Search by a general name such as sofa, cabinet, shower or desk.

Read Add and edit furniture
Can I enter the exact size of my furniture?

Yes. Select the item and enter its exact width and depth. Structural objects can also provide length or thickness controls.

Read Add and edit furniture
How do I reverse a door or other item?

Select it and use Mirror when that item supports reversing. You can also rotate the item and check its swing in 2D or 3D.

Read Add and edit furniture
Can I place a wall cupboard above the floor?

Yes. Supported raised items include a height-from-floor control so their 3D position can match the real installation.

Read Add and edit furniture
What if the furniture item I need is missing?

Use the closest available footprint and change its exact dimensions and label. You can also submit a feature request describing the missing item.

Read Add and edit furniture
Can I set an exact gap between furniture and a wall?

Yes. Select the item and use its wall-clearance controls to enter the required distance on the relevant side.

Read Position items precisely
How do I move something by only a few millimetres?

Use the nudge controls for 1cm steps. Hold Shift while nudging for 1mm adjustments.

Read Position items precisely
Why are two items overlapping?

The planner allows flexible placement, so review the plan at a closer zoom and use snapping, clearances or nudging to separate them accurately.

Organising your plan

How do I add another room?

Use the plus control beside the room tabs. Name the new tab, then draw it manually or use Quick Room.

Read Create and organise multiple rooms
Can I compare two versions of the same layout?

Yes. Duplicate the room tab, rename the copies Option A and Option B, then make different changes in each.

Read Create and organise multiple rooms
Does Save include every room tab?

Yes. The share link and editable backup contain the complete multi-room project, including tab names and order.

Read Create and organise multiple rooms
Can room tabs represent different floors?

You can use separate tabs for rooms, floors, alternatives or phases. Each tab is planned independently rather than as a vertically connected building model.

Read Create and organise multiple rooms
How do I rename a room?

Edit the current room name at the top of the planner or rename its room tab in a multi-room project.

Read Add labels, notes and arrows
Can I hide labels and measurements?

Yes. Use the visibility controls to simplify the drawing when you want a clean image, then turn them back on for detailed checking.

Read Add labels, notes and arrows
How do I add a note for my builder or supplier?

Choose the Text Box tool or press T, place the box on the plan and type the note. Keep it clear of measurements and important objects.

Read Add labels, notes and arrows
How do I point a note at part of the plan?

Choose the Arrow tool or press A, draw the arrow and adjust its style. Place a text box beside it when more explanation is needed.

Saving and sharing

What happens when I press Save?

On newer plans the Download button saves an editable PNG that Load can open again later, and your work stays auto-saved in this browser. On older plans, Save also creates or updates a cloud share link; the two are independent, so the backup still works if the cloud save has a problem.

Read Save, share and recover plans
Does my plan save automatically?

The planner keeps an autosave in the current browser while you work. For important plans, also press Save so you have a portable backup and share link.

Read Save, share and recover plans
What is an editable PNG?

It is a normal floor-plan image with the project data stored safely inside it. You can share it as an image or use Load to reopen and edit the plan.

Read Save, share and recover plans
How do I return to my plan later?

Use the share link, load the editable PNG backup, or reopen the planner in the same browser to use its autosave or Recent Plans.

Read Save, share and recover plans
Can someone else edit my shared plan?

They can open and work from the shared plan. Saving as a non-owner creates their own copy, so they do not overwrite your original link.

Read Save, share and recover plans
How do I recover a missing or replaced plan?

Check Recent Plans in the Load flow, then try the original browser, editable PNG backup or cloud link. Local recovery cannot survive if the browser's site data has been cleared.

Read Save, share and recover plans
Can I still open an older JSON plan file?

Yes. The Load flow supports legacy JSON files for compatibility, although editable PNG is the recommended portable backup for new saves.

Read Save, share and recover plans
What should I do if the backup download is blocked?

Use the manual Download button in the Save window and allow downloads for freeroomplanner.com in your browser permissions.

3D and visualising

How do I open the 3D room planner?

Create a usable room in 2D, then choose 3D View. If it does not open correctly, check that the walls form a valid room.

Read Use the 3D room planner
Can I change wall, floor and furniture colours?

Yes. Use Style for walls, flooring, kitchen finishes and lighting, and select supported items to change their individual colour or front style.

Read Use the 3D room planner
How long does a 3D photo take?

A detailed snapshot can take roughly 20–60 seconds depending on the room and device. Keep the tab open until it finishes.

Read Use the 3D room planner
Why does an item look simpler in 3D?

Some items use a simplified 3D representation while keeping the footprint and dimensions you placed in 2D.

Read Use the 3D room planner
Are changes made in 3D saved?

Yes. Supported positions, rotations, colours, styles and room finishes are stored with the plan.
