Calculate flooring for several rooms
Measure the longest length and width of each rectangular room. Add each room separately so the result shows both the project total and the packs required per room. Use metres or separate feet-and-inches fields.
Flooring calculation formula
Order area = length × width × (1 + waste percentage). For a pack estimate, divide the order area by the square metres printed on one pack and round up. Enter zero for the pack area if you only want the overall floor area.
How much flooring waste should I allow?
Ten percent is a useful starting point for standard straight-laid flooring. Large, simple rooms may need 5–7% extra. Small rooms, alcoves, diagonal layouts and boards that must be pattern-matched can need 12–20%. Confirm the manufacturer and fitter’s recommendation before ordering.
Irregular and L-shaped rooms
Split the floor into smaller rectangles, add each rectangle as a separate room, and use clear names such as “Kitchen main” and “Kitchen alcove”. Do not count overlapping rectangles twice.

The area calculation works for any floor covering. Change the waste allowance and pack area to match the material.
