Is Free Room Planner really free?

Yes, completely. There is no paid tier, no trial period, and no feature locked behind a paywall. Every tool — drawing walls, placing furniture, exporting your plan — is available at no cost. We do not ask for credit card details, and there are no in-app purchases. You can use it as many times as you like, for as many rooms as you like, without paying a penny.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can start using Free Room Planner immediately without signing up, providing an email address, or creating a password. This is one of the key differences between Free Room Planner and most competitors, which require registration before you can do anything useful.

Does it work on mobile phones and tablets?

Yes. Free Room Planner is browser-based and works on any device with a modern web browser — desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. For the best experience, we recommend using a tablet or larger screen, as room planning involves dragging and positioning items, which is easier with more screen space. But it is fully functional on a phone if that is what you have to hand.

How accurate do my measurements need to be?

For furniture layout planning — checking whether a sofa fits, experimenting with bed positions, arranging a living room — measurements accurate to the nearest 2 to 3 centimetres are perfectly adequate. For fitted kitchens and bathrooms, where units need to align precisely with plumbing and walls, aim for measurements accurate to the nearest 5 millimetres. Always measure twice and write down every measurement immediately.

Can I plan any type of room?

Yes. Free Room Planner works for bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, dining rooms, nurseries, garages, studios, and any other room you need to plan. You draw the walls to your room's exact dimensions, so it handles any shape or size. We also have specialist pages for kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and living rooms.

How do I check if my furniture will fit?

Draw your room in the planner with accurate dimensions. Then drag furniture items from the library into the room. Every item is drawn to scale, so if it fits on the plan, it will fit in the real room. You can also enter custom dimensions for specific furniture pieces if the item you own is not in the standard library. Pay attention to clearances — leave space for doors to open, drawers to pull out, and people to walk past.

Can I plan multiple rooms or an entire flat?

Yes. You can draw as many rooms as you need. For an entire flat or house, draw the overall outline and add internal walls to divide the space into rooms. This is useful for open-plan layouts where you want to see how the kitchen, dining, and living areas relate to each other.

Can I export or download my floor plan?

Yes. You can download your floor plan as an image file, which you can then print, email, or attach to messages. This is particularly useful when sharing plans with builders, kitchen fitters, or interior designers.

Can I share my plan with someone else?

Yes. You can share your plan by downloading the image and sending it via email, messaging apps, or any other method you prefer. This makes it easy to get feedback from a partner, housemate, or professional before committing to a layout.

What furniture items are available in the library?

The library includes common household items across all room types: beds (single, double, king), sofas (two-seater, three-seater, corner), dining tables, desks, wardrobes, chests of drawers, bookcases, kitchen units, bathroom fixtures (bath, shower, toilet, basin), and more. All items are drawn to realistic standard dimensions. If a specific item is not in the library, you can often approximate it using a similar item or a generic rectangular shape with custom dimensions.

Can I use it for kitchen and bathroom planning?

Absolutely. Kitchen and bathroom planning is one of the most popular uses. The furniture library includes kitchen base units, wall units, worktops, sinks, hobs, ovens, fridges, baths, showers, toilets, and basins. For detailed guidance, see our kitchen planner guide and bathroom planner guide.

How long does it take to create a floor plan?

Most people create a basic room layout in 15 to 30 minutes, including measuring the room. A more detailed plan with multiple rooms, precise furniture placement, and careful clearance checking might take an hour. The more familiar you become with the tool, the faster it gets — second and third rooms are typically much quicker than the first.

Do I need any design experience?

None at all. Free Room Planner is designed for homeowners, not professionals. The interface is intuitive — you draw walls by clicking, you place furniture by dragging, and you resize by entering numbers. If you can use a basic website, you can use Free Room Planner. For guidance on the design process, see our guides on how to make a floor plan and space planning.

Can I save my work and come back later?

Yes. Your work is saved in your browser, so you can close the tab and return later to continue where you left off. For extra safety, we recommend also exporting your plan as an image, so you have a backup copy even if you clear your browser data.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your floor plans are stored locally in your browser. We do not upload your plans to a server, and we do not share your data with third parties. You are in full control of your plans at all times.
